SAN ANTONIO, TX -- Janet Murguía, President and CEO of NCLR (National Council of La Raza,) the largest national Latino civil rights and advocacy organization in the United States, was joined on by Mayor Julián Castro of San Antonio and his family and NCLR Board Chair Daniel Ortega at the festive ribbon-cutting ceremony that launched the National Latino Family Expo during the 2010 NCLR Annual Conference in San Antonio on June 10th.

Also joining the ceremony was Dora the Explorer on her 10th birthday.

Nearly 30,000 people attended Conference on its first day alone, surpassing expectations for the four-day event.

The Conference featured a citizenship and immigration assistance session, a home rescue fair, a diversity career fair, workshops, and town halls on major issues affecting Hispanic Americans, such as education, the economy, and health.

Among the national leaders that addressed the Conference were, U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), Shaun Donovan, U.S. Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis, U.S. Senator Robert Menendez (D–NJ), City of Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon, NASA Astronaut Jose Hernandez, U.S. Department of Agriculture Deputy Administrator of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Lisa Pino, Retired Air Force Brigadier General Belisario Flores, U.S. Marine Corps Major General Angela Salinas, baseball hero Carlos Delgado, and Telemundo journalist Lori Montenegro.

Arkansas was represented by the only NCLR active affiliate in the state and member since 2004, the Hispanic Women Organization of Arkansas (HWOA).

Visit www.nclr.org/conference for more details.
