NEW YORK, NY-- For the first time ever, a Latino themed musical scored big at the 2008 Tony Awards. In the Heights took home the Best Musical, Original Score for Music and Lyrics, Choreography, and Orchestrations Tonys Awards on June 16.
I hope all of you got to watch Lin-Manuel Miranda rapping his acceptance speech for Best Original Score, it was amazing.
At his rapped acceptance speech, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Best Score, In the Heights said, “I used to dream about this, now I’m in it! It's a Latin hat at that! Mom, Dad and Cita, I wrote a play, Y'all came to every play. Thanks for being here today. Vanessa who still makes me breathless, thanks for lovin' me when I was broke and makin' breakfast. And with that, I want to thank all my Latino people. This is for Abuela Risa in Puerto Rico, thank you!"
At the 2008 Tony Awards, South Pacific lead the pack with 7 wins, followed by August: Osage County with 5, In the Heights with 4, Gypsy with 3, Boeing-Boeing and 39 Steps with 2, and Les Liasons Dangereuses, Passing Strange and The Seafarer with 1.
In the Heights, the original double-disc cast recording of In the Heights debuted at #1 on Billboard Chart on June 12, 2008. The recording also made it into Billboard's Top 200 Album Chart at number 82.
I'm sure it will not be long before Hollywood is calling and we'll see a film version of the musical. For now go to http//:www.InTheHeightsTheMusical.com for tickets, the CD and more information.
All our congratulations to Lin-Manuel and everyone involved!
