Dr. César Compadre and Senator Mark Pryor

LITTLE ROCK, AR – Senator Mark Pryor toured La Casa Health Network a community health and social services center focused on providing services to Hispanic families in Little Rock on August 15. Dr. César Compadre, President of the Board of Directors of La Casa and a professor of public health at UAMS, accompanied the Senator and demonstrated the many services that the center offers to the public.



Pryor learned of La Casa’s bilingual medical information services, toured a computer lab for internet access and technological assistance, and was briefed on a variety of youth programs, one of which focuses on preventing kids from smoking tobacco. Pryor also met with the staff and volunteers of La Casa who serve as bilingual liaisons between Hispanics of low English proficiency and government agencies, utilities, and other public services.



“I am greatly impressed by the work of César and all of the staff and volunteers at La Casa,” Pryor said. “Due to language and cultural barriers, many Latinos in Arkansas simply do not know what health care services are available or how to navigate through everyday things such as opening bank accounts, entering into rent contracts, and getting an electrical hook-up for their home. Thanks to the generosity of the staff and volunteers of La Casa, Latino families have a tremendous resource when they need assistance the most.”



Pryor emphasized that there is still much progress to be made in narrowing the disparities that exist in our nation’s health care system, and tackling the language and cultural barriers is part of that effort. He discussed his strong support for passage of the Minority Health Care Bill.
