LITTLE ROCK, AR - The Hispanic and Latino population in Arkansas has more than doubled in the last decade, from just below 87,000 to more than 186,000. The 2010 American Community Survey published by the U.S. Census Bureau shows only 2.2 percent of Arkansans over the age of 25 with any type of degree are Hispanic or Latino.
“We recognize that our state has become more racially and ethnically diverse over time, and we want Arkansas colleges and workplaces to reflect those changes,” said Shane Broadway, Interim Director of the Arkansas Department of Higher Education. “This constant growth tells us we have to start educating our youth today so that they will be fully prepared for their tomorrow.”
For the fourth year in a row, the Arkansas Department of Higher Education will host Say Go College Week Feb. 13 - 17.
During Say Go College Week, administrators, teachers, counselors, and career coaches will talk to students about what options are available after high school. This week is to help these students discover their potential. Each day is themed and designed to start conversations and expose high school students to life in college.
“There are extraordinary leaders among you, in your community, in your church, and even in your home,” said Broadway. “Say Go College Week is a time for parents to stress to their children that higher education is an added strength that will allow them to fulfill their dreams and change the world around them.”
Since the cost of college is an issue for most families, take advantage of College Goal Sunday, a free, statewide event to help students fill out their Arkansas Universal Scholarship Application (YOUniversal) and Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
