LITTLE ROCK, AR - The observance of the congressionally legislated Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, is a United States holiday marking the birthday of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., observed on the third Monday of January each year, around the time of King’s birthday, January 15, 1929.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, "Life's most persistent and urgent question is: 'What are you doing for others?” Each year, Americans across the country answer that question by coming together on the King Holiday to serve their neighbors and communities.
“It calls for Americans from all walks of life to work together to provide solutions to our most pressing national problems”, said DuShun Scarbrough, Arkansas Martin Luther King Commission (AMLKC) Executive Director.
“We acknowledge this historical day on Monday, January 16, 2012. The AMLKC is holding the Celebratory Component of “A Day of Service – A Day On, Not A Day Off” at noon in the Donald W. Reynolds Performance Hall, at the University of Central Arkansas in Conway. Pastor Cornell Maltbia will be the featured guest keynote speaker,” said Scarbrough.
Immediately following, the AMLKC will hold the “Service Component” of “A Day of Service – A Day On, Not A Day Off” next door at the Brewer-Hegeman Conference Center feeding the less fortunate and other worthwhile service activities such as health screenings, job counseling, and distributing hygiene kits.
The AMLKC in partnership with the Central Arkansas Transit Authority will be providing free bus rides all day to all of its patrons. Allowing transportation to everyone to commit to a service area throughout the central Arkansas region.
