SPRINGDALE, AR - Millions of Americans have diabetes and do not even know it.
Arkansas residents will have the opportunity to find out if they are at risk for the disease this weekend, during the 4th Annual Diabetes Expo hosted by the American Diabetes Association. More importantly, they will learn how to lead healthy lives while managing diabetes.
The ADA event set for Saturday, June 18, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. is for anyone interested in diabetes or general health and wellness. The Northwest Arkansas Convention Center will be transformed into a place for families to concentrate on their health. Screenings will be offered for A1C, blood glucose, blood pressure, cholesterol, vision, and BMI, among other things. Nutritionists will offer information and demonstrations to help people make smarter diet choices. Diabetes experts will provide one-on-one consultations and medical advice.
``The event is not just about diabetes; it is about encouraging children and adults to focus on their overall health. The free services come at a critical time for many families struggling with the challenging economy,’’ said Deryn Young, ADA board chair. ``Attendees will have access to great health care services and information on health and nutrition without concern for insurance or out-of-pocket spending.’’
About 1,500 people are expected to attend, a slightly larger crowd than last year. Health screenings at the 2010 Expo led to diabetes diagnoses. And more people are expected to find out this year that they too have the disease. More than 26 million Americans have diabetes. Back this year is a keynote speaker component. This year’s speaker is Dr. John Baldridge, a local Endocrinologist who will be discussing diabetes health for baby boomer and senior ages. His speech will be held from 9:00am-10:00pm within the main convention hall.
