SPRINGDALE, AR- The Hispanic Women’s Organization of Arkansas announces that the scholarship applications for 2011 are now available. HWOA offers scholarships in the amount of $500.00 each.
“Also, this year we will have scholarships from the Institute of Mexicans Abroad for up to $5,000 for students of Mexican origin who are in college and have a GPA of 3.0 or above. Men and women are eligible; there are different requirements for each scholarship,” said Margarita Solorzano Executive Director of HWOA.
HWOA’s scholarships are offered to students that deserve recognition and are attending or plan to attend an accredited institution of higher education or technical college.
The factors that are taken into consideration in the selection of the recipient are as follows: Hispanic origin of the student, academic history, leadership activities and /or family responsibilities, financial need, seriousness in regards to their education.
Since the year 2000, HWOA has offered 190 scholarships to Hispanic students in the community. The majority of the recipients are the first in their families to attend an institution of higher education. HWOA’s goal is to increase the number of Hispanic students that attend colleges or universities. Also, if the public is interested in supporting our program, they can make donations to increase the number of scholarships that are offered.
“The support from our sponsors allows us to continue our mission to advance educational opportunities for Hispanic women and their families, to celebrate and teach others about our Hispanic cultures, and to be active participants in the community,” added Solorzano.
HWOA was founded in 1999 by a group of Hispanic women. HWOA is affiliated with the National Council of La Raza (NCLR), the largest Hispanic organization of the United States.
