NORTH LITTLE ROCK, AR - With Spring almost here, that means high school prom is just around the corner. The North Little Rock Mayor’s Youth Council and Butterfly Ministries of North Little Rock will hold the third annual PROM event to give away evening clothes and accessories to girls who might otherwise not get to attend their prom.
On Friday, March 11th from 6 until 9, and Saturday, March 12th from 9 until 3 inside First United Methodist Church at 6701 JFK volunteers will transform the Sunday school classrooms into mini-boutiques where more than 50 young women could choose among rows of formal gowns. In the fellowship hall the teens could browse through tables of accessories to find matching shoes, purses and jewelry.
Church members donated new and gently used dresses, many worn only once.
Corsages, manicures, and hairstyle coupons from area businesses will be given away to participants.
Gently used eveningwear is still being accepted, evening gowns, shoes, purses, jewelry and accessories. Larger size dresses are especially needed.
The goal is to help families in need by offering teens free dresses for their prom or other occasions.
Many participants will be looking for outfits for their quinceañera, the traditional Latin American coming-of-age celebration for 15-year-old young women.
Mary Hoey, the ministry's executive director and a former associate pastor at First Church, said, "We don't want anyone to do without participating in an important event in their life if we can help them."
Members of North Little Rock’s First United Methodist church formed the Butterfly Community Ministry a non-profit community service organization, several years ago.
“In 2008, the board of directors of Butterfly decided to begin work on a project to provide assistance to the recent immigrant Hispanic population in North
