National Latino AIDS Awareness Day
LITTLE ROCK, AR – HIV infection has been a fact of life in most Hispanic and Latino communities throughout the United States for more than 25 years.
October 15, 2010 celebrates the end of Hispanic Heritage Month in the United States and marks the observance of the eighth annual National Latino AIDS Awareness Day.
The Arkansas Human Development Corporation (AHDC) will be commemorating National Latino AIDS Awareness Day, Saturday, October 16, from 9am to 2pm at the Vision Christian Academy, 6111 W. 83 St Geyer Springs Road. There will be HIV testing, counseling, education and material dissemination. As well as food, music, games, and door prizes.
“This is a community event to raise awareness to Arkansas Hispanics, the goal and primary objective of this event is to reduce minority HIV/AIDS and other health disparity rates in Arkansas through HIV/AIDS awareness,” said Idonia Trotter, Executive Director of the Arkansas Minority Health Commission.
“As the number of people living with HIV/AIDS continues to increase, reaching individuals at risk for HIV/AIDS with culturally competent and linguistically appropriate prevention education, HIV testing and treatment is critical,” said Trotter.
“AIDS has challenged the extended Latino family to find new reservoirs of compassion, and to confront difficult issues such as drug use and sexuality,” said Ruben Arana, Hispanic Outreach Director for AHDC.
This event is sponsored by the Arkansas Human Development Corporation, Arkansas Minority Health Commission, Arkansas Department of Health, KTUV La Pantera 1440 AM, Arkansas Catholic Diocese, Pulaski County Soccer Association and ¡Hola! Arkansas.
The AHDC’s “Promotoras de Salud” (Community Outreach Health Worker) Project serves as a fundamental and intricate delivery system to assist low-income Hispanic customers with a regional network throughout Arkansas.
