LITTLE ROCK, AR -- Imagine being a police officer, a chef or a newspaper reporter who wants to be a classroom teacher, but can’t afford the time or
expense of going to college to get a four-year degree in education. For many people who are interested in exploring the career opportunities offered by teaching this is a real dilemma.
Recognizing the needs of these individuals coupled with the needs of Arkansas school districts to hire qualified, highly motivated and licensed educators, the Arkansas Department of Education (ADE) developed the state’s Non Traditional Licensure Program (NTLP).
The NTLP was developed in 1987. In the early years, the program trained less than 30 teachers per year. The NTLP has undergone many transitions over its lifespan and currently enrolls over 400 new teachers each year. In the past five years, almost 2,400 Arkansas teachers have been trained through this alternative certification program.
“The program was designed for career changers who already possess a bachelor’s degree,” explained Patti Froom, the program administrator for the ADE.
“The wonderful thing about the NTLP is that we’re attracting folks to the teaching profession who are focused, capable and bring an extraordinary amount of life experiences to the classroom,” she said.
A tribute to the program’s success is the fact that several NTLP trained teachers have been recognized as Teacher of the Year at their schools and some recognized as outstanding teachers at the district level. “NTLP teachers are among the best and the brightest teachers that Arkansas has to offer,” Froom, said.
NTLP training is delivered at multiple locations throughout the state for three weeks during the summer and seven Saturdays, approximately one per month, during the
