The Sherwood Police Department introduces identification program

SHERWOOD, AR -- The Sherwood Police Department along with the Mayor’s Office has recently introduced a new program called the “Community Assistance Card”. “This program is designed to assist the non-English speaking Hispanic community, along with law enforcement, merchants or any other person who may need communication assistance. The Community Assistance Card will assist with communication problems that might arise within the community. This program was designed with the help of the pastors of the Community Fellowship Church located in Sherwood.” Sherwood Police Department Chief Jim Thomas said.



The Community Assistance Card will have basic personal information in English along with a photograph of the applicant on the front and emergency phone numbers along with volunteer translator’s names and phone numbers on the back. These translators can be contacted 24 hours a day 7 days a week to assist with any communication problems that may arise.



“We created this program to help fill the communication gap between the English speaking community and the Hispanic community” Chief Jim Thomas said. This service is offered through the Community Oriented Policing and Problem Solving Division of the police department and is free of charge. “The Community Assistance Card is for “UNOFFICIAL USE ONLY” but we believe it will assist everyone involved with communication problems within the community, ” said Sergeant Doug Belcher the Community Outreach of the Sherwood Police.



U.S. Senator Blanche Lincoln is working with the Sherwood Police Department to investigate ways to recreate the program across the state. “The Community Action Card program has the potential to enhance communications and relations between police and the Hispanic community in Arkansas," Senator Lincoln said.
